Salmon Glacier

From Hyder, you can drive the Salmon River Road. This is a dirt road that winds along the Salmon River to the Salmon Glacier. This glacier comes from the mountains of British Columbia and descends 4300 feet to the Salmon River. It looks like a river of ice and shows the line of rock debris called a medial moraine running down the middle of the glacier. The Salmon Glacier is the fifth largest glacier in North America. It is truly an awe-inspiring sight and well worth the drive.

We spent several days on this road. Although it is not very long, it has a lot of sight seeing to offer. Some parts of the road are cut into the sides of hills. When you see a “Falling Rock” sign, you need to be on the look out. The rocks that fall onto this road in some spots will knock you off the road. There are many places to get off the road and take pictures. There are also places of interest to which you can hike. We used our day packs to make several of these short hikes. The views are awesome, and the trip will leave you wanting to come back again!
